Lefties suffer blowout loss at hands of Ridgefield
By: Thomas Johnson
The Ridgefield Raptors were simply the better team Wednesday night, beating the Port Angeles Lefties at Civic Field.
Port Angeles compiled eight hits in the losing effort, but could not string any of them together as the Lefties tied a season-high by leaving 13 batters on the basepaths in the 11-3 loss.
While it was a tight affair through the first couple innings, a six-run sixth inning spurred the Raptors towards the win, sending 10 batters to the plate in the frame. The Lefties committed a 2-out error in the inning to extend the frame, allowing Ridgefield to score five unearned runs off of Brock Mayer (Point Loma Nazarene).
It was the lone error for Port Angeles on the evening, but it was a costly run. Defensive mistakes have been a thorn in the side of the Lefties all season, as the botches have caused 20 unearned runs in 14 West Coast League matchups.
Despite the lack of timely hitting, the Lefties had solid performances from multiple hits at the plate. Jeremy Giesegh (Cal State, San Bernardino) recorded two hits, two runs and two stolen bases to extend his hitting streak to eight games. The outfielder now has a hit in all 13 WCL matchups he’s played in, slotting in as the team’s leadoff hitter since day one.
Kosei Suzuki (Frank Phillips College) and Jason Leon (Cal State, Bakersfield) also tallied two-hit games. The trio of Giesegh, Suzuki and Leon combined for six of the team’s eight hits.
The Lefties started their series finale after the print deadline against the Ridgefield Raptors. Port Angeles stays at home for a three-game set Friday night against Kelowna.
