Lefties Sign Infielder Jake Portaro and Catcher Benny Kaleiwahea

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 7, 2017 – Port Angeles, WA – It’s a busy, cold week for the Port Angeles Lefties, but they’ve signed a couple of hot infielders to inch summer closer: Jake Portaro and Benny Kaleiwahea. Check out their snapshots below and start following their progress in spring baseball. The Lefties also announce 10-game packs for the baseball-loving sweetheart on your list and Winter Youth camps.


Portaro joins the Lefties from the University of Utah, where he plays second and third base for coach Bill Kinneberg. This 6’1″, 195 lb right-hander was First-Team All-State as a Senior at Centennial High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, helping the team win the Sunset Region title in 2014. he was also First-Team All-Southern Nevada and First-Team All-Sunset Region, as well as a star in the classroom as a member of the National Honor Society and Honor Roll. Kaleiwahea joins the roster from Tennessee technological University, where he is a catcher for Coach Matt Bragga in the Ohio Valley Conference. This 6’1″, 205 lb Lacey, WA native bats and throws right, and helped lead Timberline High School to the Class 3A regional with 26 RBI and 11 would-be base stealers thrown out. Kaleiwahea spent last summer with the Kistap Bluejackets, where he had 18 hits, 17 runs, 10 RBI, 20 walks and ended the season with a .314 OBP. He also played for Lower Columbia College under Coach Eddie Smith, where he helped the Red Devils win their 38th division championship in 2016. Winter Youth Camps have begun! Just in time to benefit spring and summer ballplayers, the Lefties teamed up with Puget Sound Collegiate League coaches to bring high-level youth training to the Peninsula. With a low coaches-to-camper ratio, every player will receive individual attention and will be challenged at their level. All camps with be held at Peninsula College Sigmar Field.
