Lefties fall to Knights, finish road trip at 2-4

Port Angeles was able to ward off the Corvallis Knights until the ninth inning, but the home side was still able to walk it off after a 23-minute rain delay in the sixth inning, completing the sweep of the Lefties.
Corvallis’ Kellen Segel (Linn Benton) came in as a pinch runner and stole third base to put him 90 feet away from giving the Knights their 10th straight win over Port Angeles.
But it was not Segel’s base running that won it for his squad, it was a Lefties mistake. As part of a season-high five-error game for Port Angeles, catcher Travis Helm (Central Washington) tried to throw out Segel, but tossed it into left field and allowed Segel to scamper home.
The Lefties recorded two errorless games to open the series, but the tough defensive showing brings their average up to 1.5 per league game.
The walk-off loss finished off the road trip for the Lefties, finishing the time away from Civic Field at 2-4. Despite the sweep, it was not all bad for Port Angeles, losing to the reigning WCL champions by an average of 1.67 runs per game.
Along with the five errors, the Lefties could not scrape enough base knocks together and plate enough runs during the whole series. Port Angeles scored a mere nine runs across the three-game set, a season low in such series.
The Lefties scored all three of their runs in different innings, not able to string their eight hits together and put up a crooked number. Port Angeles outhit Corvallis, but the Knights did a better job of timely hitting with runners on base through the series.
Jeremy Giesegh (Cal State, San Bernardino) did record a ninth-inning single and now has a hit in all 12 WCL contests. The outfielder’s .358 batting average is good for ninth in the league and his 19 hits are tied for sixth.
Port Angeles returns to Civic Field this Tuesday, taking on the Ridgefield Raptors for a three-game set. The Raptors have a 3-8 mark in league play, similar to the Lefties’ 3-9 record in the WCL.
