Lefties fall again, Wenatchee completes sweep of Port Angeles
By: Thomas Johnson
The Port Angeles Lefties continue to struggle, suffering a 15-2 loss — their largest deficit of the season — to the Wenatchee AppleSox on Sunday night.
Every hitter in the Wenatchee starting lineup recorded a hit as the AppleSox scored their 15 runs on 17 hits, 10 of the runs coming across the first two innings. First baseman Damon Gaither led the way for Wenatchee, notching five RBIs, including a bases-clearing double in the first frame to get the scoring started.
The AppleSox would not relent, dropping an additional seven runs in the second inning off 10 hits. The Lefties continued to struggle defensively, committing two errors in the frame and three across the game.
One of the few bright spots for Port Angeles was pitcher John Vaara, who came out of the bullpen to pitch four innings and only gave up one earned run. The Port Angeles High School graduate also struck out six AppleSox as he kept the game as close as he possibly could.
Just as the Lefties pitching struggled, the bats could not pick up a hit. The top six batters in the order went a combined 1-for-19 at the plate, as Port Angeles is left looking for a consistent offensive spark.
The lone hit from the top of the lineup came from Jeremy Giesegh, who now has a base knock in all of the Lefties’ West Coast League matchups. Giesegh hit a leadoff single to start out the game and came around to score — the first time Port Angeles had plated the first run of any contest this season — off a Colin Spear sacrifice fly.
The Lefties, in need of a win after starting out the season 0-5, return to Civic Field on Tuesday for another three-game series with Wenatchee. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
