Lefties Announce firsts signings for the 2018 Season

March 29, 2018, Port Angeles, WA – The Port Angeles Lefties announce the first wave of players for their 2018 season.

The Lefties embark on their second season in Port Angeles after a wildly successful inaugural campaign on the Peninsula. This season promises additional excitement as the 2018 West Coast League All-Star game will be played at Civic Field this summer.The Lefties are excited to announce the first six signed players for the 2018 season, and it’s a group that should have the fans excited for the summer at Civic Field.

The first signees are left-handed pitcher Nathan Bonck, left-handed pitcher Ethan Christianson (incoming freshman 2019) of Seattle University, left-handed pitcher Devin Sutorius, returning player Jake Portaro of Biola, infielder Brennan Rozell of Long Beach State, and Outfielder Chris Schasteen of UC San Diego.

“These are a great group of players coming in. Chastine is a plus runner, with a plus arm to play Centerfield for us. A very good athlete I see hitting at the top of the order to set the table for the guys behind him. He is going to be a key to our success on both offense and defense.” Said coach Darren Westergard. “Rozell is a senior in High school that is going to play SS for the Dirtbags. Long Beach State has a proud tradition of sending SS guys to the pros”

NATHAN BONCK (Seattle University, Sophomore) – As a freshman Nathan appeared in 15 games, starting five. He struck out 22 batters in 29.2 innings and made three scoreless appearances on the season. Nathan is a Ketchikan, Ak native.

ETHAN CHRISTIANSON (Seattle University, incoming Freshman 2018) – Meridian, Idaho native. Graduates from Rocky Mountain HS (2018). As a Junior Ethan was awarded the 2017 Gatorade Idaho baseball player of the year. He posted a 7-0 record with an 0.72 ERA and struck out 57 in 39 innings of work.

Devin SUTORIUS (Biola University, Junior) – Dana Ppoint, CA native. Devin pitched 50 innings as a sophomore at Saddleback with a 3.42 ERA. In High School he was a First-Team all-league selection in 2013 and 2014, and a Second-team all-league in 2015.

JAKE PORTARO (Biola University, Sophomore) – Las Vegas, NV native. Jake was an interquel part of the Lefties first season. Playing in 40 games he hit .238 with 3 HR, 19 RBIs, a .349 OBP and had an OPS of .730. After a slow start to the season Jake became a mainstay in the Lefties every-day lineup.

BRENNAN ROZELL (Long Beach State, Incoming Freshman 2018) – Lincoln, CA native. Brennan Rozell hit.434 at Lincoln High and played in the 2017 Area Code Games at Blair Field. Brennan has committed to
play for Long Beach State Dirtbags.

CHRIS SCHASTEEN (UC San Diego, Junior) – Sammamish, Wa native. Played 2 seasons for CoachWestgard at Skagit Valley Community College. In 2017 Chris hit .294 with a .335 OBP and .708 OPS
while manning Center Field.
